Nutrigenomics
What is Nutrigenomics?
Nutrigenomics is the cutting-edge science that studies the relationship between genes, nutrition and health. We all know that some people respond differently than others to certain foods, and nutrigenomics allows us to understand how our specific genes affect the way we respond to the foods, beverages and supplements we consume.
Your genes can influence:
-
Weight Management
-
Body composition
-
Nutrient metabolism
-
Cardiometabolic health
-
Food intolerances
-
Eating habits
-
Fitness performance
-
Injury risk
My favorite example is coffee. If you're still confused whether coffee consumption increases your risk for cardiovascular disease or is protective against it, you're not alone. Studies have been inconsistent and contradictory at times. The reason is largely due to genetic variation. Bear with me while I nerd out for a second - research now shows that the effect of coffee on cardiovascular disease is largely dependent on a variation in a gene called CYP1A2. That variation determines whether you metabolize caffeine quickly or slowly. Slow caffeine metabolizers break down caffeine, you guessed it, slower, and are therefore at increased risk of high blood pressure and heart attack with high caffeine intake. Alternatively, those who have the other variant may actually have a lower risk of heart disease with moderate caffeine consumption than those who consume no caffeine at all.
Gavi Nutrition offers 2 genetic tests, each consisting of a panel of 45 genetic markers:
-
The Nutrigenomix Health and Wellness test. This test is intended for the general public to optimize health and wellbeing
-
The Nutrigenomix Sport test. This test focuses on enhancing performance and decreasing injury risk while optimizing health.
Your results will allow me to develop the best dietary plan based on your food preferences and unique genetic profile to help you meet your nutrition and fitness goals.
